How to back up your own Instagram Reels and posts
By GetGrabVid Editorial Team · Published
Instagram is where many creators and small businesses publish their best video, and it is a poor place to keep it. Accounts can be restricted, posts can be removed and editing projects are often deleted after publishing. This guide covers the official ways to back up your own Instagram content, and where a link-based tool fits.
Download your information
Instagram lets you request a copy of your information from the Accounts Center settings, under Download your information. You can choose what to include, such as posts, Reels and Stories, and the date range. Choose a format that your computer can open, then wait for the notification that your file is ready. This is the most complete backup and preserves what you uploaded.
Save individual Reels from the app
Many app versions let you save a Reel you published directly to your phone from the options menu on that Reel. Availability varies, and the saved file may include a platform logo or overlay depending on how it was created. For the cleanest result, keep your own edit and export a master copy before posting.
Keep Stories automatically
Stories disappear after 24 hours, but Instagram can keep a private copy of each one in your Story archive. Open your settings and check that archiving is turned on. You can also save a Story to your device from the Story's menu before it expires. Highlights keep selected Stories visible on your profile.
When you only have the link
If you have the link to your own public Reel and no other copy, a link-based tool like the one on our Instagram page can fetch the video. Copy the link with the three-dot menu, paste it, choose a quality and save. It does not work with private accounts, and Stories usually cannot be resolved because their links expire. Only use it for content you own or have permission to save.
Saving other people's content
Other creators' Reels belong to them. Do not repost them as yours, do not use them in adverts and do not use their music. If you want to share a Reel, use the platform's own share and remix options, which keep credit with the creator. If you want a copy for a project, ask for permission first.
A routine that takes ten minutes
- Request Download your information every three months and store the archive
- Export a master copy of every Reel before you post it
- Name the files with the date and a short topic, such as 2026-10-12-recipe-reel.mp4
- Store a second copy on an external drive or cloud storage
- Write down the caption and the music for each clip in a text file
Common problems
- The link fails: confirm it opens a single Reel and that the account is public
- The file will not play: delete it and download again on a stable connection
- No sound: the source may not include a separate audio track, so try another quality
- Quality looks soft: the tool cannot improve on what was uploaded
